1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-039
Error
Description
Distinguished by a dramatic S-curved die gouge running from Lincoln's head to the rim between the N and G of IN GOD, RPM-039 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-683/DMR-051, this variety shares a die marker designation with RPM-037 and RPM-042, suggesting related die preparation circumstances. Five die stages have been documented. Stage A (EDS): S-curved die gouge from head to rim between N and G of IN GOD, die scratch connects lower MER of AMERICA at EDS. Stage B (EMDS): heavy die gouge on left side of G of GOD, light die cracks on columns 11 and 12, light die crack on right cornice. Stage C (MDS): die crack from head to rim left of the die gouge, die chip on right cornice. Stage D (LMDS): heavy die crack through die gouge to head, reverse is LMDS. Stage E: LDS (unconfirmed). The S-curved die gouge is an exceptionally bold diagnostic feature, making Stage A specimens particularly easy to screen — the gouge is visible under low magnification and immediately distinguishes this die from all other 1960-D RPM varieties.
