1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-030
Error
Description
Marked by a cluster of early die state scratches near the bust and date, RPM-030 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-673/DMR-041. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A (EDS): two light die scratches west off back of bust, die scratch through right upper arm of Y of LIBERTY, light die scratches above 19 of date, reverse is EDS. Stage B: MDS (unconfirmed). Stage C (LDS): light die crack N-S in hair, die chip at tip of upper E of ONE. The early die state scratches on the bust and through LIBERTY provide clear diagnostics for Stage A specimens, while the N-S hair crack and ONE die chip characterize the late state. Denver produced both Large Date and Small Date Lincoln cents in 1960, with the Large Date representing the earlier production phase. The abundance of RPM varieties cataloged on the 1960-D Large Date — now numbering well beyond thirty — reflects the enormous volume of working dies consumed by Denver during this period, each one hand-punched with a unique mintmark application.
