Description

One of the more diagnostically complex repunched mintmark varieties on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-027 spans seven die stages across two reverse die pairings. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-669/DMR-037 and UVC-670/DMR-038, the die's history includes die clashes, date-area cracks, and a rim cud — a rich progression for variety specialists. Under the first reverse (UVC-669/DMR-037): Stage A (EDS): die scratch from 1 to 9 and from 9 to 6 of date, reverse is EDS. Stage B (EDS): obverse is EDS, small rim cud over E of AMERICA. Stage C (EMDS): obverse is EMDS, die break at right eave. Stage D (MDS): die clash through 1 of date, die scratches NW-SE through date, die chip on column 12. Stage E (LMDS): obverse is LMDS, die chip above right cornice. After the reverse die change (UVC-670/DMR-038): Stage F (LDS): die chip and crack between 9 and 6 of date, die clash has been abraded away, reverse die changed at EDS. Stage G (VLDS): die break between 9 and 6 of date, reverse is MDS. The abrading away of the die clash between Stages D and F confirms that mint personnel polished the obverse die to remove clash marks before continuing production.
