1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-025
Error
Description
Bearing a triple-punched mintmark described as D/D/D East, upper serif, RPM-025 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-667/DMR-035, this variety progresses through four die stages. Stage A (EDS): obverse and reverse are EDS. Stage B (MDS): light die crack over V.D.B., reverse is MDS. Stage C (LMDS): medium die crack over V.D.B., die scratches NE-SW over obverse, reverse is LMDS. Stage D (LDS): die chip in upper 9 of date, die chip on upper column 12. The upper serif displacement indicates that the secondary and tertiary punch impressions are most visible at the top horizontal stroke of the D, where even small positional shifts produce measurable separation. The progressive development of the V.D.B. die crack from light to medium across Stages B and C offers a useful screening diagnostic — collectors who spot a crack in the V.D.B. area can quickly narrow the die state before examining the mintmark. Triple-punched RPMs are inherently less common than standard D/D varieties, as they required an additional correction step during die preparation.
