Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-666/DMR-034, RPM-024 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent that progresses through three documented die stages. Stage A (EMDS): obverse and reverse are EMDS. Stage B (MDS): small die gouge under bust, die gouge on the outside lower loop of the second S of STATES at MDS. Stage C (LDS): obverse is LDS, die break on column 12, depression at right eave. The die gouge on the second S of STATES provides a distinctive reverse diagnostic, as letter-level gouges on the reverse inscriptions are relatively uncommon among 1960-D RPM varieties. Denver's 1960 cent production was massive, and the Large Date subtype was the earlier and more widely produced of the two 1960-D variants, meaning dies used during this initial production phase saw heavy service before the mid-year hub transition redirected manufacturing to the Small Date design. Collectors should examine the mintmark area under at least 7x magnification to confirm the secondary D impression, and then verify the reverse diagnostics to distinguish RPM-024 from other nearby RPM numbers in the catalog.
