Description

Progressing through four documented die stages under VarietyVista designation UVC-649/DMR-017, RPM-011 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Stage A captures the earliest recorded condition, where the secondary D is most prominently visible alongside the primary mintmark. Stage B shows the secondary impression at intermediate die state as production wear begins to soften the repunch details. Stage C documents further advancement with additional die deterioration markers. By Stage D, the die reaches its later production phase. The 1960-D Large Date cent was produced in enormous quantities at the Denver Mint before the mid-year hub transition introduced the Small Date subtype, and the high-speed production operations consumed dies rapidly, generating the progressive state changes that RPM specialists use to classify individual specimens. In the pre-1990 era when mintmarks were hand-punched into working dies, each die received its own unique mintmark application, creating the potential for repunching whenever the initial placement required correction. RPM-011's four-stage documentation allows collectors to determine where their example falls in the die's service life.
