1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-010
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-648/DMR-016, RPM-010 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent that progresses through four documented die stages. Stage A presents the secondary mintmark at early die state, where the repunching is most clearly defined before production wear begins to erode the secondary impression. Stage B advances to an intermediate condition with developing surface characteristics. Stage C shows further deterioration, and by Stage D, the die reaches late production phase with accumulated wear markers. The four-stage progression provides collectors with a useful framework for dating individual specimens within the die's production run, as early die state examples with the strongest secondary mintmark carry the greatest attribution interest. Denver's 1960 Large Date production generated a substantial number of working dies, and the hand-punching process used to apply mintmarks in this era made each die unique — no two received exactly the same mintmark placement, which is why so many distinct RPM varieties exist for this date. Collectors assembling a comprehensive set of 1960-D RPM varieties will find that RPM-010's four clean stages offer straightforward diagnostic criteria for identification.
