1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009
Error
Description
Showing a triple-punched mintmark described as D/D/D south, north, RPM-009 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-647/DMR-015, this variety progresses through three documented die stages. Stage A presents the triple D at early condition, where all three impressions are most clearly distinguishable. Stage B shows intermediate wear. By Stage C, the die reaches its later production phase with accumulated deterioration. The south-then-north offset sequence is particularly interesting mechanically: the initial mintmark was placed too far south, the second correction overshot to the north, and the third and final application landed in the intended position. This oscillating correction pattern contrasts with the consistently westward corrections seen on RPM-004 and RPM-007, demonstrating that mintmark punching errors at the Denver Mint occurred along multiple axes during the 1960 production run. Collectors examining the mintmark area should look for partial D impressions both above and below the primary letter, as the vertical displacement from the south-to-north sequence tends to produce separation visible on the serifs and curved portions of the D.
