Description

Remarkable for its quadruple-punched mintmark described as D/D/D/D east, northeast, serifs, RPM-008 is the most mechanically complex repunched mintmark on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista across two reverse die pairings as UVC-3506/DMR-149 and UVC-646/DMR-014, this variety spans five die stages. Under the first designation (UVC-3506/DMR-149), Stage A documents the quadruple-punched D at its initial condition. After the transition to UVC-646/DMR-014, Stages B through E trace the die's progression from early through late production phases, with the secondary mintmark impressions gradually weakening as die wear and polishing erode the shallower punch marks. The four-punch sequence — east, northeast, with serif involvement — indicates the die maker attempted at least four separate applications of the mintmark punch before achieving the intended position, each time shifting the punch in a different direction. This level of correction is exceptionally rare, as most repunched mintmarks involve only two or three applications.
