Description

Progressing through six documented die stages under VarietyVista designation UVC-642/DMR-010, RPM-005 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Stage A presents the earliest recorded condition, where the secondary mintmark is most clearly visible before production wear begins to diminish the repunch details. Stages B and C document intermediate die states as the die accumulates scratches, cracks, and chips characteristic of high-speed cent production. Stage D marks a transition toward later die state, with more pronounced deterioration markers becoming evident. Stage E shows advanced wear, and by Stage F, the die reaches late condition with terminal deterioration features. The six-stage span indicates a die that saw sustained service during Denver's prolific 1960 production run. The 1960-D Large Date cent was the more commonly produced of the two 1960-D subtypes, meaning this die operated during the primary phase of production before the Small Date hub was introduced mid-year. Collectors building a comprehensive RPM attribution set for the 1960-D date will find RPM-005's well-documented die state progression useful for precisely dating their specimens within the die's production life.
