1960-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1960D-02LD

Description
Cataloged by MadDieClashes, this 1960-D Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date variety exhibits a horizontally misaligned die clash, a specialized form of clash where the dies contacted each other without a planchet while offset horizontally from their normal alignment. The contour of Lincoln's ear matches the clash mark on the reverse, providing diagnostic confirmation that the transferred design element originated from the obverse die's portrait area. Unlike standard die clashes that produce symmetrically positioned transfer marks, horizontally misaligned clashes create marks at unexpected locations because of the lateral offset between dies at the moment of contact. The Large Date variety designation places this within the well-known 1960-D date size classification, where both Large Date and Small Date varieties were produced with distinct numeral styles. Denver struck over 1.58 billion cents in 1960, a massive output split between the two date sizes. The Lincoln Memorial reverse had been introduced just one year earlier in 1959, making this a very early Memorial Cent issue. The bronze composition of 95% copper with tin and zinc was standard for the denomination.
