Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960-D 5-cent WRPM-007, this Jefferson Nickel displays a repunched D mintmark from the Denver Mint. No external cross-references beyond the Wexler listing are currently known. Die markers on the obverse include several die scratches running SW/NE to the left of the nose and forehead — directional striations that document the die's surface condition and help fingerprint this specific obverse die. Additional obverse markers include die scratches running WNW/ESE through the upper UN in UNITED and a die scratch running ENE from the top left of the second T in STATES. These multiple directional die scratch patterns across different areas of the die face create a comprehensive identification network: the SW/NE scratches near the portrait, the WNW/ESE scratches through UNITED, and the ENE scratch from STATES collectively provide three independent zones for verification. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1960, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.2 mm. Schlag's obverse portrait of Thomas Jefferson faces left, and his reverse Monticello design depicts the historic Virginia residence. The 1960-D had a substantial mintage, and the 7th documented repunched mintmark for this date-mint indicates a reasonably diverse population of RPM varieties within the 1960 Denver die inventory. Repunched mintmarks on early 1960s Jefferson Nickels represent the continuation of manual D punch application that would persist until mintmarks were incorporated into master dies beginning in 1990, permanently ending RPM varieties on all denominations.
