1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-017

Description

A D/D Tilted variety from the inaugural year of the Lincoln Memorial reverse, this VarietyVista-documented 1959-D cent tracks progressive die deterioration across four stages. Die markers UVC-631 / DMR-026: Stage A with obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B with a light die crack on forehead at MDS and a small die chip on column #12 at MDS; Stage C with a medium die crack on forehead at LMDS, a medium die chip on column #12 at LMDS, and two small die chips on column #11; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The progressive growth of both the forehead crack and column #12 chip from light/small to medium across Stages B and C, plus the emergence of column #11 chips, documents systematic die degradation. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, this Denver Mint issue inaugurated Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse design in 1959.
