1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-012
Error
Description
The twelfth and final cataloged repunched mintmark in the VarietyVista files for the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-012 carries the designation UVC-626/DMR-021 and progresses through three documented die stages. Stage A represents an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B is the most diagnostic, showing die scratches running northeast-southwest across the obverse at mid die state, a die crack running north-south through Lincoln's hair, die breaks on both columns 1 and 12, a die break at the right eave, and a die crack on the right roof. This concentration of multiple die cracks and breaks in Stage B indicates rapid deterioration under the high-speed production conditions at the Denver Mint. Stage C represents a late die state that remains unconfirmed. The extensive die failure documented in Stage B — with cracks and breaks distributed across the hair, both end columns, the eave, and the roof — suggests this die pair was approaching retirement when Stage B specimens were struck, making them among the last coins produced from this particular combination of dies.
