Description

Carrying VarietyVista designation UVC-625/DMR-020, RPM-011 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent notable for an early die state die clash in the eighth bay of the Memorial. Stage A combines die scratches running northeast-southwest across the obverse at early die state with this die clash mark in the eighth bay, plus a medium die chip on the right cornice. The presence of a die clash alongside the repunched mintmark makes this a dual-interest variety, as clash marks indicate an event where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without an intervening planchet, transferring incuse impressions of each die's design onto the other. Stage B shows weakening of the obverse die scratches at mid die state, with a medium die break developing on column 12 and a die crack on column 11. Stage C represents a late die state that remains unconfirmed. Collectors examining 1959-D cents for this variety should look first for the northeast-southwest obverse die scratches as an initial screening tool, then examine the eighth bay area of the Memorial for the clash mark before confirming the repunched mintmark itself.
