Description

From the inaugural year of Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, this VarietyVista-documented 1959-D Lincoln Cent tracks mintmark visibility from strong through extinction. Die markers UVC-609 / DMR-004: Stage A shows a strong secondary mintmark at EMDS with a die gouge northeast from the bridge of the nose and reverse at EMDS. Stage B has a weak secondary mintmark at MDS with a small die chip on column #1 at MDS. Stage C reveals the secondary mintmark completely missing at LDS, the nose die gouge still light but visible, and a small die chip on column #12 at LDS. The complete disappearance of the RPM at LDS while the obverse die gouge persists demonstrates that different surface features erode at different rates under striking stress. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm at the Denver Mint.
