1959-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1959D-01
Error
Description
Cataloged as ADC-1c-1959D-01, this atypical die clash on a 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent displays two-sided clash marks that depart from the normal alignment expected in a standard die clash event. Unlike typical clashes where the dies meet in their standard parallel orientation, atypical clashes involve dies that are tilted, shifted, or otherwise mispositioned, producing transferred design elements in unexpected locations. On this specimen, strong clash marks from the Memorial roof appear near the bowtie and date area on the obverse, indicating significant die misalignment during the clashless strike. The reverse shows lathe lines visible in two of the Memorial bays, an additional production artifact that adds to the coin's die variety interest. This coin was submitted by Louis Fan. Atypical die clashes are considerably scarcer than their typical counterparts and are actively studied by die clash specialists for the insights they provide into press mechanics and die alignment failures.
