1958 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint, this 1958 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse was attributed by Ben Peters and exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling. A close-to-medium constant spread appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS, while a closer spread increasing from left to right shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The variable spread across different inscriptions reflects the geometry of hub distortion during die production — areas at different distances from the distortion point display proportionally different displacement. As a proof issue, this coin was struck on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Obverse die markers include a very short die scratch below Jefferson's eye. On the reverse, a die scratch appears on the rim below MER of AMERICA, and a short slanted die scratch can be found inside the long left window of Monticello.
