1958-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
Catalogued by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-311 and DMR-004, the 1958-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002 is the clockwise-rotated counterpart to the RPM-004 on the same date and mint. Where RPM-004 shows a counter-clockwise rotation of the secondary D, RPM-002 exhibits a D/D Rotated CW — the underlying ghost punch is displaced by a clockwise rotation relative to the accepted mintmark position. The die progressed through three stages. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B, mid die state, is the most specifically characterized: the reverse is MDS, the obverse is identified as ODV-005 (Flared G) also at MDS, and a small die chip appears on the nostril — a particularly precise locator for Stage B specimens. Stage C, late die state, is unconfirmed. The Flared G obverse designation (ODV-005) distinguishes this die from the Straight G obverse seen on RPM-004, helping variety specialists correctly attribute examples even when the mintmark area is slightly worn. The 1958-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint, the last full year of silver dime production before the 1965 clad transition.
