Description

Marking the final year of Lincoln Wheat Cent production, 1958 holds a terminal position in the series before Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse replaced Victor David Brenner's iconic wheat ears in 1959. This CU-1C-1958D-10 is the tenth documented rim cud for the 1958 Denver Mint issue, an exceptionally high count that reflects both the heavy production volume and the extensive collector interest in last-year-of-issue varieties. A piece of the die fractured at the rim and broke away, creating the characteristic raised featureless blob at the coin's edge. Ten cataloged cuds for a single date and mint combination indicates that numerous dies developed rim fractures during the 1958-D production run, each one preserving a unique failure pattern. Denver struck over 800 million Wheat Cents in 1958, its final contribution to a reverse design that had been in continuous use since 1909.
