Description

First reverse cud documented for the 1958 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this die break variety comes from the absolute final year of the Wheat Cent series — the last vintage of Victor David Brenner's iconic wheat ears reverse before the 1959 transition to Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial design. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and separates completely, and the resulting void in the die fills with metal during striking to produce the distinctive raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. As the first cataloged reverse cud for 1958-D, this variety establishes the baseline entry for what may be a broader population of cuds from Denver's final Wheat Cent production run. Denver struck approximately 800 million cents in 1958, the last D-mint Wheat Cents ever produced, and the die pairs that struck these coins were among the final to carry the wheat ears reverse design. The terminal-year status of the 1958-D cent gives every variety from this date added collecting significance — these are among the last coins that will ever bear the design that defined the American cent for half a century. Cross-referenced as CU-1C-1958D-01R and cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this variety marks a milestone as the first documented cud from the Wheat Cent's Denver finale.
