1958-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-022

Description

Identified by VarietyVista under die codes UVC-1150 and DMR-025, the 1958-D RPM-022 Lincoln Wheat Cent carries a D/D repunched mintmark displaced to the southeast — the secondary D punch was positioned below and to the right of the initial impression, leaving a ghost of the first D visible above and to the left of the final corrected placement. The southeast displacement direction provides a diagnostic contrast with RPM-021 (north) and RPM-018 (rotated CW) from the same date, enabling collectors to differentiate among the many 1958-D RPM varieties through their directional signatures alone. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse confirmed at early die state (EDS), Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). As the twenty-second cataloged RPM for the 1958-D date, this variety underscores the remarkable frequency of mintmark repositioning events at the Denver Mint during this high-volume production year.
