1958-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-597 and DMR-013, this 1958-D Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a D/D Northeast repunched mintmark — meaning the initial D impression was placed slightly too far to the southwest, and the corrective second punch positioned the final D to the northeast, leaving diagnostic remnants of the first impression. Three documented die stages track the variety: Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B is mid-die-state (MDS) characterized by a faint secondary mintmark and the reverse in MDS, and Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The Stage B notation that the secondary mintmark is faint at MDS is diagnostically important — it indicates that die wear during the middle of the die's service life had already begun to soften the secondary D impression, suggesting that specimens from the earliest die state would show the clearest repunching evidence and that late-state examples may have very subtle or nearly invisible secondary mintmarks. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was designed by Victor David Brenner for the obverse, struck at the Denver Mint in 1958 — the final year of the wheat ears reverse before Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial design debuted in 1959. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, the coin weighs 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter.
