1958-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

From the final year of the Lincoln wheat cent series, this 1958-D variety is cataloged as RPM-002 by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-589 and die marriage record DMR-005. Three die stages chronicle the die's working life across a notable progression. Stage A finds both obverse and reverse in early die state. By Stage B at late-to-mid die state, two die cracks have appeared in the hair on the obverse, while north-south die scratches cross the reverse. Stage C in late die state shows the obverse further deteriorated, but interestingly the reverse die scratches have worn away through continued use, and a small die chip has developed on the T of CENT. The disappearance of the reverse scratches between Stages B and C illustrates how die wear can erase earlier markers, making early-stage specimens more diagnostically useful. As 1958 was the last year of wheat reverse production before the Lincoln Memorial design debuted in 1959, varieties from this date carry transitional-era appeal for collectors closing out wheat cent sets with variety attributions.
