1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-023
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this 1957 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-023 is a Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) variety exhibiting a very close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and AMERICA on the reverse. Class II doubling results from a distorted hub impressing into the working die, and the very close spread classification indicates the secondary impressions sit extremely near the primary design elements — requiring careful examination under strong magnification and proper lighting to resolve. The reverse die markers include a die scratch above the small right window of Monticello and die scratches to the upper right of the large center semicircular window. These architectural features of the Monticello building provide precise and repeatable reference points for confirming the die identity. No obverse die markers were noted on the examining specimen. Proof Jefferson Nickels from 1957 were struck at Philadelphia using specially polished dies on mirror-finish planchets, and the reflective proof surface can either aid or hinder doubled die detection depending on the angle of illumination. Attributed under the Wexler variety designation 1957 WDDR-023 Proof, collectors should examine the E PLURIBUS UNUM and AMERICA legends under at least 10x magnification, using angled lighting to separate the very close secondary impressions from the primary lettering.
