1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Discovered by John A. Wexler — the founder and namesake of the Wexler doubled die listing system that has become a cornerstone reference for U.S. die variety attribution — the 1957 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-007 carries the authority of its discoverer's expertise. This Class II distorted hub doubling variety shows a close spread on E Pluribus Unum that increases in intensity from left to right, with a closer spread visible on AMERICA. The obverse features an almost vertical die scratch extending from the lower portion of Jefferson's collar onto his shoulder, while the reverse displays a die dot to the right of the long right window and another to the right of the small left window of Monticello. Wexler's personal identification of this variety reflects the same meticulous die-by-die examination methodology that he systematized into the attribution framework used by collectors and dealers worldwide.
