1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
ErrorDescription
Classified as Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling, WDDR-019 on the 1957 Proof Jefferson Nickel presents a very close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED. Distorted Hub doubling arises when the hub develops a subtle warping during its operational life, transferring a slightly deformed impression to the working die — the resulting displacement is characteristically tight and uniform rather than the rotational spread seen in pivoted or rotated hub classes. The obverse carries slanted die scratches on the front of Jefferson's collar, while the reverse shows a die scratch connecting the lower portions of MO in MONTICELLO and a separate slanted die scratch on the roof above the small right window. These multiple die markers across both sides provide a comprehensive diagnostic profile for attribution. The 1957 Proof Jefferson Nickel was produced at Philadelphia during the final decade of that facility's exclusive proof production run. Proof mirrored fields render even the tight Class II spread visible under proper magnification and oblique lighting. Attributed under the Wexler cataloging system.
