1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
ErrorDescription
Discovered by Frank Baumann, this 1956 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel carries WDDR-019 with Class II distorted hub doubling. The spread moves toward the center, increasing from left to right across UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with tripling on some lower serifs revealing at least three hub impressions. A stronger constant spread toward the center appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The obverse features a heavy die gouge on the base of the shoulder beneath the queue. The reverse carries an array of identifying scratches: several curving southwest from the lower B in PLURIBUS, three parallel diagonal scratches between the lower L and U of PLURIBUS, numerous scratches over the left and right roofs of Monticello, and a scratch through the lower TIC of MONTICELLO. Cross-referenced as CONECA 21-R-II and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1956 WDDR-019, the graduated spread increasing from left to right demonstrates the geometric distortion characteristic of Class II hub doubling where the working hub was tilted during impression. Reverse: Several die scratches curving SW from lower portion of B of PLURIBUS; three parallel, diagonal die scratches between lower portions of L and U of PLURIBUS; numerous interesting die scratches over left and right roofs; die scratch through lower portions of TIC of MONTICELLO.
