1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-016

Description

Attributed to Gary G. Wagnon, this 1956 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with nice doubling visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM and closer doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Class II doubling results from a slight distortion or tilt of the hub during die production, producing a consistent spread across the affected lettering. The difference in spread width between E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — wider on the former, closer on the latter — reveals the geometry of the hub distortion, with areas farther from the pivot point showing greater displacement. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design serves as the canvas for this variety. Obverse die markers show none noted, while the reverse carries die scratches to the upper right of the small right window, a die gouge below the small left window, a slanted die scratch inside the first U of PLURIBUS, and die gouges through the lower portion of the first S of STATES.
