1956 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Attributed by Frank Baumann, the 1956 WDDR-009 exhibits nice Class II distorted hub doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, with closer doubling also visible on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Class II doubling occurs when the hub shifts laterally during the die impression process, and on this Jefferson nickel reverse the displacement affects both the motto and the denomination legend, providing multiple locations for collectors to confirm the variety. No obverse die markers were noted. The reverse carries several distinctive die gouges for authentication: one to the lower right of the second S of STATES, one above the left arch of Monticello, one to the right of the large semicircular window, and one to the right of the M of UNUM. Cataloged under the Wexler designation 1956 WDDR-009, this variety demonstrates how the architectural details of Schlag's Monticello reverse, with its columns, arches, and windows, create an abundance of reference points where die gouges can be precisely located for attribution purposes. The spread across both EPU and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA indicates the hub displacement was sufficient to affect design elements across a wide area of the reverse die surface.
