CU-1C-1955S-05R Cud

Description

Fifth reverse cud documented for the 1955 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this die break variety is notable for coming from a facility that had recently resumed cent production after a brief hiatus. San Francisco had suspended cent striking in 1955, and while S-mint cents from this date do exist, they were produced in limited quantities compared to the Philadelphia and Denver operations. A cud forms when a section of the die rim breaks away completely, and the resulting void in the die fills with metal under striking pressure to produce the raised featureless mass that characterizes this error type. The 1955-S cent is already famous in numismatic circles because of its association with the celebrated 1955 Doubled Die Obverse (struck at San Francisco), and while the cuds from San Francisco are unrelated to that iconic variety, they benefit from the heightened collector interest in all 1955 cent varieties. Five documented reverse cuds from the S-mint date indicates that multiple reverse dies developed rim fractures during the production run.
