Description

The year 1955 looms large in Lincoln Cent variety collecting thanks to the famous DDO-001 doubled die obverse, but proof cents from that same year carry their own die variety story. RIDB-1c-1955-05 is the fifth cataloged rim cud on 1955 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cents, where a fragment of the die fractured at the rim and broke away to create a raised featureless area along the coin's edge. Proof production at the Philadelphia Mint involved specially prepared dies and polished planchets struck at higher pressure to achieve mirror-like fields, and this elevated striking force contributed to die stress that could propagate rim cracks. The proof format's sharp detail and reflective surfaces make rim cuds visually dramatic, as the smooth, featureless blob contrasts starkly with the surrounding mirror field. Five documented rim cuds for a single proof date indicates that multiple proof dies developed rim fractures during the 1955 production cycle.
