Error
Description
Discovered by Robert Ralston and attributed as 1955 WDDR-011 Proof, this proof Jefferson nickel exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling on the reverse. A spread shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right. Close doubling appears on CENTS, CELLO of MONTICELLO, and the right side of the building. Obverse die markers include a die gouge on Jefferson's nose left of his eye and concentric die scratches in his hair. Reverse markers include a short vertical die scratch above the long right window, a small die dot below the large center semicircular window, a slanted die scratch left of the small left window, and a short die gouge left of the lower building near the rim. The Class II mechanism produces distortion that varies in width across design elements rather than a uniform separation. Proof surfaces with their mirror fields can make subtle doubling more apparent.
