1955 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
ErrorDescription
Class II Distorted Hub Doubling defines this proof-only 1955 Jefferson Nickel DDR, where a close spread manifests on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Class II doubling results from a rotational distortion of the hub relative to the die during the impression process, producing a consistent directional spread across affected design elements. Reverse die markers include a slightly slanted die scratch to the left of the small left window, a short slanted die scratch to the lower left of the long left window, and a small die dot below the T of CENTS. Obverse: none noted. Cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 1955 WDDR-010 Proof. The 1955 proof Jefferson Nickel was produced exclusively at Philadelphia in a mintage of 378,200 proof sets, and DDR dies among this limited production represent a narrow population. Brian A. Ribar documented this variety, contributing to the comprehensive Jefferson Nickel variety catalog that remains an essential reference.
