RCD-1c-1955-04R Retained Cud

Description

Appearing on the reverse of the 1955 Lincoln Wheat Cent, RCD-1c-1955-04R is a retained cud variety accompanied by a notable obverse die crack on the skull area, identified as the "white arrow" marker. This obverse crack serves as a key diagnostic for attributing the specific die pairing, since the crack transfers as a raised line across Lincoln's head on struck coins. Retained cuds form when a section of the die rim fractures but does not fully separate, remaining loosely in place during subsequent strikes and producing a partially raised, somewhat flattened mass near the rim. The 1955 Philadelphia Mint cent is best known for the dramatic 1955 Doubled Die Obverse — one of the most famous error coins in American numismatics — but the date also produced other die varieties including this retained cud. The Wheat Cent reverse, designed by Victor David Brenner and used from 1909 through 1958, features two wheat ears flanking the inscriptions ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
