1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018
ErrorDescription
Brian A. Ribar attributed this variety, designated WDDR-018 for the 1955 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, documenting close Class II distorted hub doubling on OF AMERICA and very slight doubling on UNUM. Class II doubling produces a spread from angular misalignment between hub and die during secondary hubbing, with displacement varying across the die face based on the tilt angle. The close spacing indicates a minor misalignment — enough to create detectable secondary images under magnification but not visible to the unaided eye. Obverse die markers include a vertical die scratch inside the G of GOD, a distinctive feature serving as a reliable fingerprint for this working die. On the reverse, a long slanted die scratch through the V of FIVE provides a second strong attribution marker. Jefferson Nickels from 1955-D were produced in moderate quantities at Denver during the mid-1950s. Collectors should look for the close doubling on OF AMERICA as the primary diagnostic, verify the slight spread on UNUM, and confirm the die scratches on G and through V as supporting markers.
