1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-017

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this seventeenth doubled die reverse for the 1955 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel is classified as a Class II distorted hub doubled die with close doubling visible on OF AMERICA and very slight spread on UNUM. The doubling is concentrated in the upper reverse legend, requiring magnification to confirm the hub-produced displacement. What makes this die especially distinctive is the heavy die scratching that dominates the reverse: heavy die scratches below LL of MONTICELLO, heavy die scratches below and through MO of MONTICELLO, and heavy die scratches through and extending left of the long right window of the building facade. These prominent scratches suggest the die experienced significant contact damage or aggressive maintenance during its service life, and they serve as the most readily identifiable die markers for confirming this specific variety. No significant obverse die markers were noted, placing full attribution reliance on the reverse features.
