Classified as Class II distorted hub doubling, this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse shows close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, attributed by Brian A. Class II doubling results from a distortion in the hub or die during the hubbing process — rather than a lateral or rotational shift, the hub surface deforms slightly, producing doubling that appears as design elements that are slightly spread or misshapen rather than cleanly offset.
