1955-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Very light spread confined to OF AMERICA on the Monticello reverse, DDR-003 also carries a notable secondary classification: the reverse is listed as OMM-003, meaning this die exhibits both a doubled die reverse and an overmintmark — two distinct error types coexisting on a single working die. Die markers tracked under UVC-405 and DMR-006 reveal an exceptionally detailed three-stage die life. Stage A in Early Die State shows a die scratch west from the dome, a die scratch running north-south through the D of UNITED, and two die scratches north-south in front of Jefferson's eye. Stage B transitions both reverse and obverse to Mid Die State. By Stage C, only the die scratch through the D of UNITED remains visible — the other EDS scratches having been obliterated by die wear — confirming Late Die State with the obverse also at LDS. Denver struck 74,464,100 Jefferson Nickels in 1955, and this die marriage's dual classification as both DDR-003 and OMM-003 makes it a particularly significant find for collectors pursuing either doubled dies or overmintmarks. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the progressive disappearance of die scratches across the three stages provides a textbook example of how die wear systematically eliminates surface markers, making late-stage specimens harder to attribute without reference to the surviving Stage C diagnostics.
