1954-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1954-S Roosevelt Dime carrying WRPM-002 represents one of only two cataloged repunched mint marks for this date and mint in the Wexler system. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1954-S 10¢ WRPM-002, documenting a working die on which the S mint mark was punched more than once, producing overlapping impressions detectable under magnification. Silver Roosevelt Dimes from the mid-1950s occupy an interesting niche for variety collectors: they carry both precious metal value — approximately 0.07234 troy ounces of silver per coin — and numismatic interest as die varieties on a classic mid-century design. San Francisco's dime production in 1954 was modest compared to Philadelphia's output, giving S-mint varieties a smaller surviving population and correspondingly greater scarcity in the marketplace. The hand-punching process for mint marks continued at all branch facilities until 1989, and the relatively small number of working dies San Francisco required for its 1954 dime run explains the low RPM count. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog have been published for this variety.
