Recorded by VarietyVista, the 1954-S RPM-003 Jefferson Nickel carries die markers UVC-398 / DMR-004 tracking three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS with a large die gouge between the AM of AMERICA on the reverse and the obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The prominent gouge between AM provides a highly visible reverse marker for rapid identification independent of the mintmark. Struck at San Francisco in 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm diameter, this coin represents the penultimate year of San Francisco nickel production — the facility ceased striking five-cent pieces after 1955, making RPM varieties from this date among the last San Francisco Jefferson Nickel mintmark varieties of the original design era.
