Description

Holding the second catalog position for the 1954-S date, this Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-397 / DMR-003 across three stages: Stage A at EDS with numerous fine die scratches East-West on the reverse and the obverse at EDS; Stage B with both at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The numerous fine E-W reverse scratches at EDS likely resulted from a die finishing operation where an abrasive tool was drawn horizontally across the die face before production, creating parallel striations on every coin struck in this earliest state. At 75% copper and 25% nickel, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1954-S was among the later San Francisco issues in the original design series. The early catalog position suggests prominent separation readily detectable by variety searchers.
