Description
Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-502 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this 1954-S Jefferson Nickel leads the RPM catalog, documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-396 / DMR-002. The S/S North displacement shows the secondary S shifted upward. Three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS with the reverse in late die state and a die crack running northwest across the hair on the obverse. The die crack through Jefferson's hair follows a natural stress path where the portrait's highest relief concentrates striking forces. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1954, the final year of San Francisco nickel production before the facility temporarily ceased five-cent piece output.
