1954-S Over Mint Mark OMM-001

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-501, this VarietyVista-documented 1954-S Jefferson Nickel exhibits an S/D South over mint mark, where a San Francisco S was applied over a previously placed Denver D, indicating die reassignment between facilities. Die markers UVC-400 / DMR-006: Stage A with light die scratches east-west on the upper reverse at EMDS and a die scratch through U of TRUST toward the forehead at EMDS; Stage B with a strong D mintmark visible south at MDS, obverse at MDS; Stage C with a medium D mintmark south at LDS, obverse at LDS; Stage D with a weak D mintmark south at VLDS and a light die crack northwest in the hair at VLDS. The progressive weakening of the underlying D from strong to medium to weak documents how die wear gradually obscured the original Denver mintmark beneath the S overpunch. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm.
