Description

Exclusive to the proof format, this 1954 Washington Quarter DDR-004 presents mixed doubling severity across the reverse: light split lower stems on the heraldic eagle's olive branch, light spread on AMERICA, and medium extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the eagle's head. The mixed intensity — medium on upper legends and the eagle, tapering to light on lower elements — maps the gradient of hub displacement across the die face. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0833 and DMR-007, the die is documented in Stage A (early die state) with diagnostic die gouges on the right side of the O of DOLLAR and on the lower I of AMERICA, while the obverse is also in early die state. The split stem effect occurs when doubling shifts the olive branch stems enough to create a visible gap in what should be a continuous line — a subtle but distinctive feature on the heraldic eagle design. As a proof issue struck with polished dies on specially prepared planchets, the doubling appears against mirror-like fields with exceptional clarity. The 1954 proof quarter was produced exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver composition.
