1954 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
The 1954 WDDR-001 is a proof-only Washington quarter doubled die reverse exhibiting a close Class II spread towards the center on USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, the lower leaves, the branch ends, and slightly on E PLURIBUS UNUM. This coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter, representing one of the final decades of silver Washington quarter production before the composition change in 1965. The reverse die markers provide clear attribution points: a wavy die gouge on the center inside of the eagle's left wing, a die dent on the lower left side of the A in STATES, and heavy die scratches between the lower O and F in OF. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. Cataloged by the Wexler Team with no known cross-references, this variety carries the Wexler Variety ID 1954 25c Pr WDDR-001. The Class II distorted hub doubling produces a spread that diminishes from the periphery toward the center of the die, which explains why the lettering around the rim shows the effect most prominently. John Flanagan's heraldic eagle reverse design, used from 1932 to 1998, provides ample fine detail where this type of doubling can manifest. Proof quarters from the 1950s were produced in relatively modest quantities, making proof-only varieties less frequently encountered than their business strike counterparts.
