Description

Progressing through the 1954 Philadelphia Rim Cud sequence, CU-1C-1954-04R occupies the fourth documented position — with the gap between -01R and -04R indicating that varieties -02R and -03R exist in the broader catalog but fall outside this batch. Rim Cuds present a distinctive appearance: because the fracture is confined to the outermost portion of the die, the resulting raised area forms a narrow band along the edge rather than a broad interior mass. This subtlety can make Rim Cuds harder to spot in casual examination, but experienced error collectors learn to run a fingertip along the rim feeling for the characteristic raised step where normal plain edge gives way to the flat cud surface. Philadelphia's 1954 Wheat Cent production was part of the final five-year stretch of the series, and dies from this period benefited from decades of manufacturing refinement — yet no process improvement can prevent the fundamental physics of fatigue failure at a structural discontinuity. The rim remains the weakest zone of any coin die, and the 1954 Philadelphia Rim Cuds confirm that even the primary mint experienced regular rim fractures during sustained production.
