1954 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Attributed by Ben Peters under Wexler Variety ID 1954 WDDR-003, this 1954 Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VI distended hub doubling — a type caused by excessive hubbing pressure that pushes design elements outward from the center, creating extra thickness rather than directional spread. Very nice extra thickness shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and CENTS, demonstrating a comprehensive effect across the reverse inscriptions. Obverse die markers include a die gouge below the G of GOD. Reverse die markers include a die dot below the second O of MONTICELLO and a die scratch extending from the C of MONTICELLO. The 1954 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel was produced during the mid-1950s when coin production was substantial but had not yet reached the extraordinary levels of the early 1960s coin shortage era. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design was in its sixteenth year by 1954, and the die manufacturing processes had been well established through years of production. Class VI distended hub doubling is mechanistically distinct from other doubled die classes — rather than the hub or die shifting position between impressions, the excessive pressure causes the metal in the die to flow outward, thickening design elements from the center out. The "very nice" designation from Peters indicates this is a clearly visible example of the class, with the extra thickness on the inscriptions providing accessible diagnostic features for collectors examining specimens under moderate magnification.
