1954 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Presenting Class II Distorted Hub Doubling, this 1954 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDR-002 exhibits strong spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM with lesser but still visible spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CENTS, ELLO of MONTICELLO, and the right side of the building. All spreads increase in magnitude from left to right, a characteristic directional pattern of distorted hub doubling where the hub flexed asymmetrically during the sinking process. Obverse die markers show none noted in current attribution records, placing the diagnostic burden entirely on the reverse. The reverse carries a die scratch running northeast from the upper left of the V in FIVE and a short die scratch extending east-northeast to the right of the large semicircle above the two center columns of Monticello. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety's left-to-right increasing spread pattern across nearly the entire reverse inscription makes WDDR-002 a useful teaching example of how distorted hub doubling manifests directionally across a die's surface.
