Denver struck approximately 71.6 million cents in 1954, a moderate output still consuming enough die pairs for rim fractures to occur. The mechanism follows the standard pattern: repetitive strikes concentrate stress at the rim junction with the collar until a section separates, leaving a cavity that fills with bronze planchet metal.
